This June, Almo team members reached the finish line and completed the company’s charitable Virtual 5K. With a total of 73 participants and a donation of $7,500 to Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Almo team stepped up for a great cause.
Since its founding in 1946, Almo has built a prominent philanthropic presence by amplifying activist voices and condemning hatred within the company and on a national scale. Through the support of local and national social activist organizations, Almo works to uplift the voices of marginalized groups.
Last year, Almo sponsored an employee Virtual 5K event, donating to three national organizations that demand justice for marginalized persons. Following the success of this health-conscious event, Almo hosted this year’s virtual run, advocating for Asian American and Pacific Islanders’ civil and human rights.
For each Virtual 5k participant, Almo provided a monetary donation to Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an activist group founded in 1991. Asian Americans Advancing Justice, or AAJC, helps build and promote a fair society for all by fighting injustices in education, health care, child welfare, and immigration. By working to increase visibility of the Asian American community, fighting for equal protection, and increasing the role of the community in political conversations, the organization creates practical and lasting solutions to chronic injustices.
Almo’s Virtual 5k took place over the course of four days, beginning on Sunday, June 20th and ending on Thursday, June 24th. Almo requested that each participant submit a photo of their sneakers and bib to signify their completion of the event, which they could complete anytime during the four-day span.
Before completing the 3.11 miles, Almo team members added creative touches to their bibs, with graphics and text to reflect their personalities and spread important messages. Many participants also included screenshots of their 5K completion time, along with their running or walking pace.
Following the conclusion of the 5K, many Almo team members reflected on the importance of this experience. Gisela Ramirez, Account Manager for ProAV Global Sales, explained, “I love that Almo gives me the opportunity to participate in events where it not only benefits an amazing cause fighting for civil rights for Asian Americans, but also to virtually connect to my fellow colleagues while having a positive effect on my health.”
Allison Roddy, D2C Brand Marketing Manager, enjoyed the opportunity to support such an important and valuable cause. She said, “While I was completing my walk with my family in my local park, I was able to reflect on the privilege I have to move safely through my community on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Almo’s donation to an organization that stands up for anti-Asian hate is important and appreciated.”
By participating in the virtual event, Almo team members truly showed their support for this important organization. Almo looks forward to amplifying the voices of other important activist groups through charitable events in the future.
